Using pictures within Word
Using pictures within OpenOffice Writer and Microsoft Word
Inserting images into Microsoft Word 2010 document - below
They are graphical word-processors. This means that as well as allowing you to type text into them you can also insert pictures. Images, graphs (charts) or movies! All of them have to be in a suitable format i.e. pictures in jpeg, gif etc.
Below - insert images in OpenOffice Writer 2009

After clicking - from file - the box appears as below - just click an image and it will be inserted into your document.

Add an image or graphics file to a document. In Microsoft Word
To insert - Make sure that the Drawing toolbar is displayed. If it
is not, then click on the Drawing icon displayed within the Standard
toolbar. Click on the Insert picture icon, located in the Drawing toolbar.
Select from file to access pictures on your computer or some other options
might be available.
Use the scroll bars to scroll down through the available pictures. -
Click on the image that you wish to insert.
Sounds and motion clips can also be inserted.
