We're going to concentrate on Microsoft Word 2003/2007/2010 and Openoffice - Microsoft word is Expensive whereas OpenOffice is Free - Both are powerful programs but they both have inherent problems and in order to make them work without complications it's IMPORTANT to change the default settings, especially in Word
This will stop Microsoft Word saving in the .docx type file. Many people using older systems cannot open this file, nearly everyone can open a .doc file - change it to .doc - as below
The same problem applies to OpenOffice Writer - it will try to save to its default in OpenOffice format which is unreadable by Microsoft Word - Change this as below
